UOW celebrates 50 years of impact

In 2025, the University of Wollongong celebrates 50 years as an independent institution. Originally established to provide tertiary education to support the region’s steel industry, the University has since developed into an internationally-recognised teaching and research institution ranked among the top one per cent of universities in the world.

A lot has happened in 50 years. It started in 1975,

gaining independence to become Wollongong strong from a university

born of steel to a global institution built on discovery.

We look forward to championing the next generation of artists, entrepreneurs,

and problem solvers. So here's to the next 50 years of impact,

inspiration, and innovation.

50 years of UOW

In 2025 we will share events, activities and stories that honour the University's legacy, connect with our communities and ignite excitement about our future.
